After the Second World War, Europe is collapsing. In this difficult situation, the conflict between the two Europes escalates. Facing the Soviet expansionism, the countries of Western Europe turn to the United States for economic assistance and military protection. The reconstruction of Europe is then the subject of a broad debate. From 1948 onwards, under pressure from the pro-European movements, the debates around the reconstruction of and peace in Europe quickly step up. The “Cold War” atmosphere is very much present since 1946.

Was Europe then doomed to internal division? Following periods of great tension and major crises, such as the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the Berlin Crisis of 1960-1961, the 1968 Prague Spring and the imposition of martial law in Poland, in December 1981, measures are taken to resume the dialogue between East and West with a view to a new European structure.

The events of 1989 made this a year to remember in Europe, leading to profound changes not only in Central and Eastern Europe but also in Western Europe. The year of 1989 incisively questioned the genuine links between European integration and democratization.
