The Department of History of Art in Cambridge is delighted to invite applications to their very first Global Humanities Visiting Professorships, to start in the autumn of 2021. The Department is seeking to select candidates in three areas in the field: Islamic*, African, and East Asian art and architecture.

Global Humanities Visiting Professorships, University of Cambridge

Those approved as non-residential scholars will hold the title of Visiting Professor for the entire academic year 2021-22 and will have access during the whole year to the University’s resources (housed principally in the University Library, Fitzwilliam Museum, and Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology). They will be asked to spend two weeks at an appropriate time of their choice during one of the three academic terms contributing to undergraduate and graduate teaching by offering a pair of master classes embedded in those University resources, and will be invited to give a talk about their own research and its broader contribution to the field in the Department’s relevant public seminars. The Department will also seek to draw on the expertise of these scholars in enhancing its curricular targets as well as identifying funding sources to continue to sustain research and teaching in these subject areas.

The funding for each of the Visiting Professorships (£3,250) is expected to cover 2 weeks of college accommodation, travel expenses and an honorarium.

Scholars with a proven track record in their field of expertise are encouraged to submit a CV and covering letter detailing their possible contributions to the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, suggested topics to contribute to one of the Faculty Seminars, and how they might be involved and teach through Cambridge's collections. If you are not already known to the Department, please include the name and email address for two referees in your CV.

The deadline for applications is 1 April. Interviews will take place in the week commencing 17 May and as part of the selection process those invited for interview will be asked to prepare a short (ten-minute) presentation to elaborate on the suggestions outlined in their cover letter.

We particularly welcome applications from women / candidates from a BME background for this vacancy.

If you are interested in this exceptional research and teaching opportunity please email your CV and covering letter by 1 April to recruitment@aha.cam.ac.uk specifying when during the Michaelmas (October to December), Lent (January to March) or Easter (April to June) Term you would wish to carry out the two weeks of engagement with the Department.

For further details about this opportunity please contact Mrs Mary Howe, faculty.manager@aha.cam.ac.uk in the first instance.

* As the largest representation of the Fitzwilliam Museum's objects is earthenware there would be a preference for a candidate working on Islamic ceramics.
