The Department of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of transnational or global history. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly after.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in history or a related humanities discipline grounded in historical archival research by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate will bring critical and interdisciplinary methods to the historical study of cross-regional circulations of people, capital, goods, or culture, or will critically examine the history of the ideologies and power politics of global systems, policies or phenomena including migration. While we welcome applicants working on all time periods or regions, we especially encourage applications from scholars whose work challenges received periodization, broadens transnational inquiry by researching beyond the “Global North,” provides a gendered lens, and/or contributes to one or more of the department’s other five programs besides History: African Studies, Classical Studies, Food Studies, Global Asia Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
The successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching at the time of appointment, to continue to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level, and to establish an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. Evidence of excellence in research may include proof of an outstanding dissertation, (forthcoming) publications in leading journals/presses, presentations at major academic conferences, awards and accolades, an exceptional research statement and writing sample, and strong endorsement from referees of high standing. Excellence in teaching can be shown by strong teaching statement and evaluations, innovative course syllabi, and other evidence in the submitted teaching dossier as explained below.

Besides an undergraduate appointment at UTSC, the successful candidate will be appointed to a graduate unit at the University of Toronto appropriate for the disciplinary background, including but not limited to the Graduate Departments of History, Classical Studies, East Asian Studies, or the Women & Gender Studies Institute. The new hire will teach and supervise both undergraduate and graduate students, develop courses at all levels, and contribute teaching and service to multiple programs in the department.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualification and experience.
