The German Historical Institute (GHI) Washington DC is part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad. It fosters research in the fields of German, American, transatlantic, as well as global and transregional, history. The present profile-building research topics of the GHI Washington are the history of knowledge, migration history, and digital history. Currently, at the GHI branch office in Berkeley, the research field of “Transoceanic History” is being developed; it combines methodological approaches from Pacific and Atlantic Studies.

The advertised position is for someone studying the (trans-)regional history of the Pacific. The time period one’s research focuses on may lie anytime from the early modern period to contemporary history. Applicants should be in possession of an outstanding and already completed Ph.D. degree at the time of the application. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research entails a connection between the Asian Pacific area and North or Latin America.

The position will form part of the project “Streams of Knowledge: Processes of Entanglement and Disentanglement in the Pacific Area.” This is a joint project carried out in cooperation with the German Historical Institute Moscow and the German Institute for Japanese Studies in Tokyo. The position is planned for the 3-year period of the project, from 1 March 2019 to 28 February 2022, on a part-time basis (80%). The GHI offers very competitive salaries and a generous benefits package, and it is an equal opportunity employer and a family-friendly workplace.

The GHI’s Pacific Regional Office at Berkeley is a dynamic workplace with a small but outstanding team in the Bay Area. The position presents opportunities for the successful applicant to conduct self-directed research in the framework of the joint project through the institute’s ties to the University of California, Berkeley, its proximity to the National Archives in San Francisco, the Hoover Archives, and Stanford University, among others, as well as through its role in the transatlantic research landscape. The position involves diverse responsibilities including the coordination of activities within the research focus of “Transoceanic History” and its inter-institutional network “Streams of Knowledge: Processes of Entanglement and Disentanglement in the Pacific Area” in coordination with the director of the GHI Washington as well as the head of the branch office in Berkeley. The position also involves active participation in other scholarly tasks at the GHI Washington and its Berkeley office. These include, among others, communicating with other scholars, planning and carrying out scholarly events (conferences, workshops, seminars, lecture series), and publishing one’s own scholarship. German language skills and experience in securing grant funding, organizing conferences, as well as in using digital media and formats, would be advantageous.

Please submit the usual files (chronological resume, list of publications, transcripts), a short project proposal along with the names of two references (written letters of recommendation will be requested by the GHI if desired) electronically only (in one pdf file) with the heading “Research Fellow Pacific” by January 13, 2018, to the
