The Northern Bridge Consortium – a Doctoral Training Partnership funded by the UK's Arts and Humanities Research Council – is advertising a new round of PhD scholarships. In addition to covering fees and maintenance, these awards involve support for research training and placements as well as access to a range of tailor-made activities for doctoral candidates in the Arts and Humanities.

Within the wider framework of the Northern Bridge scholarships, we are delighted to announce a Collaborative Doctoral Award project in partnership with the UK's National Union of Students (NUS), entitled 'The NUS and its international engagements'.

We are inviting applications for projects that investigate inter-/transnational dimensions of 20th-century student activism in the UK. For further details, please consult the advertisement, which also specifies a variety of potential angles and topics that could be explored within this general remit: http://www.northernbridge.ac.uk/media/sites/researchwebsites/northernbridge/National%20Union%20of%20Students.pdf

The principal supervision of this project will be based at Northumbria University in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, yet the candidate will also benefit from the expertise of NUS's International Director, who is based at the organisation's Edinburgh office. In addition, the candidate will have access to various academic networks, initiatives and projects connected to the history of student activism.

The application process is outlined on the Northern Bridge website: http://www.northernbridge.ac.uk/competition/howtoapply/

Potential candidates should contact Dr Daniel Laqua (daniel.laqua@northumbria.ac.uk), Associate Professor of European History, by 14 December 2018 for an initial discussion.

Formal applications are due on 9 January 2019.
