12-months research fellowship on West German – Chinese cultural relations during the Cold War (University of Venice)

The Department of Asian and North African Studies at the University of Venice “Ca’ Foscari” invites applications for a 12-months research fellowship on the subject “Cultural relations between People’s Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Germany, 1949-1972”. The fellowship is part of the three-years research project financed by the Italian Ministry of Education “Paths of rapprochement between Western Europe and the People’s Republic of China during the Cold War years: a comparison between Italy and the Federal Republic of Germany, 1949-1972” (Principal investigator: Prof. Guido Samarani).

LANGUAGE SKILLS REQUIRED: English; German (reading); Chinese (reading)

SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISORS: Prof. Guido Samarani – Prof. Laura De Giorgi

ABSTRACT: Starting from the important and innovative results obtained in the analysis of the economic and commercial relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People's Republic of China in the 1950s and 1960s, the aim of this project is to analyze the modes of interaction on the cultural level - in the broader sense - between Maoist China and Federal Germany in the same historical period. Although the diplomatic relations between the two countries were formalized only in 1972, the connections between China and Germany could actually rely on deep and solid historical roots dating back to the pre-war period (early decades of the 20th century) or even to the last part of the 19th century. These were the basis of the contacts between Beijing and Bonn after 1949, which developed in the framework of unofficial diplomacy until the start of bilateral diplomatic relations. The project aims at analyzing the cultural aspects of these relations. More specifically, the project includes the analysis of the German press and the Chinese press on the subject of bilateral relations and its role in creating the reciprocal image for the domestic public opinions respectively, and the development of academic and scientific contacts and exchanges in this period. Cultural relations developed in this period will be analyzed on the background of German Federal Republic's foreign policy with respect to the socialist countries. The study of the printed sources will be matched, where possible, by research in the German and Chinese government and academic archives. The material collected during the research will be disseminated, provided authorization, on the website dedicated to the research project.
