The multi-disciplinary Department of Global Political Studies (GPS) at Malmö University, Sweden welcomes applications to a four-year tenure track position in Global Politics, with deadline April 8, 2019

About the position

The position as associate senior lecturer is intended to provide early career researchers with an opportunity to develop their independence as researchers and advance their research and teaching expertise for the purpose of enabling them to fulfil the requirements for appointments as senior lecturers. This is a tenure-track position which can be held for a maximum of four years. An associate senior lecturer who meets the qualification requirements for employment as senior lecturer has the right, upon application, to be considered for promotion to a permanent position as senior lecturer (see below). Teaching is not expected to exceed 50% of working time.

This position will, in addition to teaching, mainly involve research within the field of Global Politics studies. The associate senior lecturer will be involved in all aspects of the research process, including project planning, research design, empirical analysis, presentation of findings at conferences, and preparation of manuscripts for submission to leading peer-reviewed journals. Associate senior lecturers will spend up to 50 percent of their time on teaching at the Department of Global political studies and will also actively participate in the activities of the department such as seminars and workshops.

Qualifications

Candidates should have obtained a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of Global Politics or a related field (for example International Relations, Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Studies, European Studies and Political Science). The PhD should be completed no more than five years before the last date for application.

Selection criteria

This is a career development position focused on research as well as teaching in relation to the stated subjects. The position is intended to be an early career step, and the assessment of the applicants will be based both on their research qualifications and potential as researchers as well as teaching proficiency.

These are the assessment criteria:

- Quality of the research proposal (originality, feasibility, outcomes)
- Ability to develop and conduct high quality research within the field of global political studies including
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to display rigour in problem formulations and research plans
- Theoretical and methodological skills within the relevant fields
- Excellent communication skills in English in both speech and writing
- Proven ability to co-operate with colleagues in other disciplines
- Publications
- Quality of teaching

Assessment of candidates is based on their degree of proficiency and ability with respect to the qualifications listed above. All teaching staff at Malmö University are expected to have completed, or be about to undergo, training in higher education teaching and learning of at least 15 credits. Since the assistant senior lectureship is a tenure track position, the applicants’ research and teaching qualifications should primarily be assessed in terms of quality. An applicant’s quantitative advantage, which can be explained by the fact that the applicant has been active for a longer period of time, should not be decisive.

Promotion

According to Malmö Universities’ current appointment rules an associate senior lecturer who meets the qualification requirements for employment as senior lecturer has the right, upon application, to be considered for promotion to senior lecturer.

A person is qualified for appointment as senior lecturer at Malmö university if he or she

- has obtained a PhD in a design discipline relevant to the position
- has demonstrated teaching expertise through their ability to develop, conduct and manage education
- has demonstrated an ability to engage with wider society and communicate their activities within their area of responsibility
