Institute for International Studies

Zum 1. Juli 2005 werden im Rahmen des vom Australian Research Council geförderten Forschungsprojekts “Germany in China: Colonial Interactions, Qingdao 1897-1914” zwei Promotionsstipendien vergeben. Das gesamte Projekt wird vom Institute for International Studies, University of Technology Sydney (Australien), getragen.

TWO PhD SCHOLARSHIPS

The Australian Research Council has recently announced funding to support this project for 2005-2007. As part of the project, its Chief Investigators, Professor David S G Goodman and Dr Yixu Lu, propose to award two PhD scholarships. Both scholarships will cover the full costs of tuition, as well as a living allowance at the same rate as an Australian Postgraduate Research Award. The project will also cover costs of travel to and from Germany and/or China, as appropriate. The two PhD scholarships will be based at the Institute for International Studies, University of Technology, Sydney.

The Project

Qingdao, in Shandong Province (East China) was originally developed as a German naval base and colony between 1897 and 1914. While its political and administrative development has been examined to some extent, its social and cultural history has largely been ignored by later Chinese and German historians and governments. The main aim of this project is to remedy this lack. Examining the contemporary record of socio-political interactions between Germans and Chinese in colonial Qingdao will ascertain whether and, if so, how and to what extent Qingdao was in practice an atypical example of late nineteenth-early twentieth century colonialism. One explanation of this phenomenon may be that the German Colonial Office’s policy settings for Qingdao were unusual and followed from regarding China not as an inferior but as an equal culture and civilisation, and the project will test this hypothesis. A secondary aim is to contribute commentary from the experience of colonial Qingdao to the analysis of colonialism in this period, highlighting in particular the practical and theoretical consequences that ensue when a colonial power does not regard the colonised people as in need of civilising.

Scholarships and application

Two doctoral scholarships are available from July 1 2005.

It is envisaged that
· one scholarship will support a doctorate in Chinese Studies with the emphasis on Chinese attitudes towards Germans, German policies and culture in the relevant period. This scholarship would be ideal for a candidate with a background in literary or historical studies.
· the other scholarship will be in German Studies and investigate the social and cultural interactions between the German community in Qingdao and Chinese society. This scholarship would be ideal for a candidate with a background in historical studies, or the study of social and political change.
This division is not prescriptive and a precise determination will depend on the candidates appointed.

Applicants should be well qualified academically, with a good BA Honours, a completed Masters or Staatsexamen or equivalent qualifications.

Applicants must have a good working knowledge of at least two of the three languages: English, German and Chinese, and be able to read and write at a high level of literacy and understanding. Communication skills in all three would be preferable.

The scholarships are available for three years and the successful candidates are expected to be based in Sydney, and to be able to travel to China and/or Germany as appropriate.

The final theses may be written in English, German or Chinese.

Applications should include both a detailed curriculum vitae, name of two referees and a thesis proposal (up to 10 pages.)
