Session “Port-towns of Atlantic Europe in the Middle Ages / Villes portuaires de l'Europe Atlantique au Moyen Age” at the International Conference on Urban History in Ghent (2010)

We warmly invite you to propose papers for the session “Port-towns of Atlantic Europe in the Middle Ages” at the International Conference on Urban History, that will take place in Ghent in September 2010.

From 1 October until 1 December 2009, paper proposals for the accepted sessions of the conference can be submitted on the website, where you can also find the list of sessions and further information about this conference (www.eauh2010.ugent.be/paperproposals). By 1 February 2010 at the latest, the session organizers will inform you if your paper has been accepted. Conference registration will start on 1 March 2010.

The Conference languages are English and French.

This main session at the 10th International Conference on Urban History in Ghent (1-4 September 2010) aims to present a state of art and new directions in the research of the Atlantic port-towns in the Middle Ages. The general aim is to bring together historians who have been working in this field of research to share their knowledges and to increase the awareness on the diversity of the ongoing projects that have ports as their main field of study. Participants will be invited to submit a 1 page proposal presenting the research works in relation to recent studies in this field which results we hope that they could be applied to the common knowledge of the Atlantic port-towns in the Middle Ages. Some suggested topics include:

- Sources of historical knowledge and new methods of research
- The geography of the Atlantic coast
- Facilities and port infrastructures
- Urban networks, connectivity and maritime traffic
- The functions of the townports and the jurisdictional control of the coastal and maritime space
- Maritime societies
- Fisheries
- Maritime trade and port-hinterland relations
- Maritime culture
- Maritime identity and the cultural communication
