AEGIS are staging a major conference on Africa south of the Sahara in the centre of London, next year. Around 90 panels will address topics across the entire disciplinary range of African Studies.

The conference represents a new stage in the development of AEGIS which was founded in 1991 as a network of university centres of research on Africa within the European Union.

AEGIS has never sought to organize events exclusively for the Centres belonging to its network, but rather to open its events widely. These have included such joint activities as workshops, small thematic conferences and summer schools. The 2005 conference is seen as a further step in the process of achieving the organizational resources needed for a European organization of Africanists.

Although the Call for Panels is now closed, the Call for papers is open until 1st November. ´

Please send panel-related enquiries to panel convenors; all other enquiries to aegis@nomadit.co.uk.

Following a strong response, the Call for Panels is now closed; we have accepted nearly 90 panel proposals. (sea below)

The Conference Steering Committee is now pleased to invite interested papers-givers to submit a title and 50 word abstract to the convenor of an appropriate panel.

Graduate students interested in Africa are also encouraged by the Steering Committee to submit proposals for papers on subjects across the gamut of the humanities and social sciences applied to Africa. These should be sent to Professor Alessandro Triulzi (a.triulzi@agora.it).
