The term Global South is not a unified or homogeneous concept. It can have a geographical meaning, referring to countries that are located in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. It can have a non-State centric meaning, referring to the marginalised people within countries, being them in the geographic North or South. For some it is used almost interchangeably with Periphery, Third World, Rising Powers, Developing Countries, Non-Aligned Movement or Non-Western Countries. For others, nothing could be farther from the truth. So, what is the Global South? What is its applicability and analytical value?

CORE THEMES

1. Global South: Concept, Theory & Practice
2. Global (South?) Economic Governance
3. Integration of the South in to the World Economy
4. Environment and Climate Change: A Southern Perspective
5. Urban Transformations in the South

FORMAT

Lectures & Dialogue. Lectures & Dialogue will be taught using a combination of expository lecture and dialogue with the speaker and the audience. The L&D will focus on the five core themes of the Winter School, providing an opportunity to critically reflect on the Global South theme from multiple perspectives.

Workshops. The Workshops will be led by one or two professors and designed to be interactive. There will be two Workshops: one at the beginning of the Winter School, laying the basis for the dialogues during the week, and one at the end, summing up what was discussed.

Writeshops. The writeshops will focus on participants’ own work. The aim of the writeshops is for participants to concretely develop their academic written work while also creating the environment to foster collaboration between participants. We will work in small groups of people whose work addresses similar themes, combining short exercises with intensive writing and peer review sessions.

Lectures. Lectures will be offered by researchers in the field, focusing on further perspectives of the Global South – such as foreign policy, gender studies and geopolitics of knowledge.
