The European Union’s Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries (so-called Action 1). It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third countries.
The Centre for Advanced Studies at the University of Leipzig co-ordinates one of these new programmes, the European Master ‘Global Studies – A European Perspective’. This newly established joint master programme integrates four closely related Master programmes offered by four different European institutions of higher education: the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science (United Kingdom), the Institute for Social and Economic History at the University of Vienna (Austria), the Willy Brandt Centre for German and European Studies at the University of Wroclaw (Poland), and the Centre of Advanced Studies at the University of Leipzig (ZHS, Germany). The European Master ‘Global Studies – A European Perspective’ commences with the winter term 2005/06.
In order to give the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses selected under Action 1 a strong external projection, a scholarship scheme for third-country graduate students and scholars from the whole world is linked to them. This scholarship scheme addresses highly qualified individuals who come to Europe to follow the Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses or to work for them. The grant is EUR 1,600 a month (ten study months) plus a fixed amount of EUR 5,000 a year (for travel expenses, tuition fees, …).
Leipzig as the co-ordinating institution for the European Master ‘Global Studies – A European Perspective’, therefore, invites students from non-EU countries to apply, through Leipzig, for a scholarship to study the European Master ‘Global Studies – A European Perspective’.

Applications should include:
• CV
• proof of an excellent BA in the social sciences or humanities
• proof of excellent English and / or German language skills
• two academic references (with e-mail address of referee)

All applications should be directed to em@uni-leipzig.de and arrive no later than March 1, 2005. Additional certified copies to prove the minimum entry requirements shall be send to:
