The Research Center of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center (Moscow) together with the Ben-Zvi Institute (Jerusalem) and the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Samarkand) are organizing a conference devoted to the interaction, mutual influence of various Jewish groups and their ethno-confessional neighbors in Central Asia, the Caucasus and in the border regions during the "colonial era" of the 19th - 20th centuries and nowadays.

At the Crossroads of Cultures: The Jews of Central Asia and the Caucasus

The Research Center of the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center (Moscow) together with the Ben-Zvi Institute (Jerusalem) and the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Samarkand) are organizing a conference devoted to the interaction, mutual influence of various Jewish groups and their ethno-confessional neighbors in Central Asia, the Caucasus and in the border regions during the "colonial era" of the 19th - 20th centuries and nowadays. We consider a wide range of topics related to Jewish life in Central Asia and the Caucasus, including, but not limited to:

- The impact of modernization on the life of Jewish communities,
- Political regimes,
- Relations and interactions with local and foreign populations,
- Connections within Jewish communities and with other communities,
- Cultural and assimilation processes,
- Language policy

Format: the conference will take place in Moscow on June 14 and in Samarkand on June 16-18, 2023. Online presentations are also welcome.

We accept proposals in Russian and English languages (simultaneous translation is possible)

Deadline on answering the proposal: April 15, 2023

After the conference, we plan to publish a peer-reviewed collection of articles in Russian and English

We will try to cover travel expenses both to Moscow and Samarkand (partially or in the whole, depending on the cost), accommodation in Moscow (up to 2 nights), and Samarkand (up to 3 nights). Visa support cannot be provided, but the Organizing Committee can send an official invitation.
