Inequalities of many kinds have provoked in the past movements of resistance and conflict, with expectations of change in Portugal, Spain, and their respective colonial territories in America, Africa, and Asia. These actions on behalf of individuals and groups, in their turn, have inspired and produced discourses of failure and success, whose interpretations are currently being revised to overcome Eurocentric or racist prejudices.

The research groups from CIDEHUS (UÉ/UAL, Portugal) and Companhia das Índias (UFF/FFP-UERJ, Brazil) are welcoming papers from master and doctoral students on the topics covered by the two European-funded projects, RESISTANCE: Rebellion and Resistance in the Iberian Empires, 16th-19th centuries and FAILURE: Reversing the Genealogies of Unsuccess, and which embrace the innovative perspectives proposed by their research.

This International Graduate Seminar also encourages the careful and insightful use of historical sources, both written and visual (manuscript, printed, engravings, pictures, maps, etc.), on behalf of graduate students working in archives or libraries, since original sources and digital copies demand a methodological reflection suitable for our current challenges.

This event has the support of two research projects, Circuitos Oceânicos (Unifesp/FAPESP) and Práticas de Justiça (UFF/Faperi).

Calendar and Registration:
31 May 2023: Deadline for proposal submission.
30 June 2023: Participants will be informed of selected papers.
31 July 2023: The final program will be made available to participants and the public, with information on the activities to be held in person and/or online at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, Portugal, and Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil.

Proposals should be submitted through the form available on the website. We welcome paper proposals in Portuguese, Spanish, or English. The Scientific Committee will assess abstracts according to the thematic suitability of their content and the work developed with the sources. It will select around 60 proposals to allow for 15-minute presentations in the coordinated sessions planned for the two days of the seminar.
