The Afro-Latin/American Research Association (ALARA) is pleased to convene its sixth biennial interdisciplinary and international research conference in the historic port city of Veracruz, Mexico, August 08-15, 2006. This year’s conference theme is “Revisiting the Third Root: Linking Afro-Latin America's Past and Future in the 21st Century” / “Otra mirada a la tercera raíz: vinculando el pasado y el futuro de Afro-Latino-América en el siglo XXI.” In recognition of his many outstanding contributions to Afro-Latin/American literature and culture, ALARA recognizes Manuel Zapata Olivella (1920-2004), Afro-Colombian writer, intellectual, anthropologist, cultural worker, and its late honorary president, and dedicates the conference to his memory.
