Border regions are laboratories of European Integration. On grounds of border regions we can examine the relationships between neighbouring countries. Due to the direct contact between at least two nationalities, the possibility of a stress-free social co-existence dismantling prejudices and stereotypes can be studied with the help of regional examples.

In the framework of the seminar PhD- and graduate students from different European countries will deal with this topic. A special emphasis will be put on the comparison between the German-Polish and German-Danish border region. How did both develop historically? What kinds of problems/issues do inhabitants of border regions have to face? What does the social coexistence look like? How far have prejudices and stereotypes been overcome? It will be questions such as these that participants will deal with during the seminar. In the end all results of the discussions, lectures and analyses will be published in a collected volume.

The seminar will be free of charge, all expenditures will be covered!

First, the historical development of both the German-Polish and German-Danish border region will be examined and analyzed. Have there been parallel developments? To what extent have these developments been similar or different?

After that, recent problems and issues will be discussed in a comparative perspective. Can the German-Danish border region be used as a role model with regard to the treatment of minorities? While the German-Danish border region is similarly developed in terms of economic and social well-being, the German-Polish border region is still characterized by an economic imbalance. Does this difference impact on the neighbouring relations in both border regions? And if so, how?

The seminar is intended to contribute to German-Polish relations. The students will discover historical images, developed on grounds of specific social conditions. More and more frequently, the discussion of border regions is characterized by overlapping differing perspectives, which contributes to the impairment of national perspectives. In addition, the regional identity becomes more relevant to young people.

The lecturers of the seminar will give introductions to the several panel-topics, while the students can prepare and give extensive presentations and contributions.
