An interdisciplinary research team of the University of Bern and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) is announcing a

Post-doc position (80 % - 100 %, 12 months).

In times of highly politicized debates about increasing “irregular” migration, authorities are called upon to en-force sovereign powers of controlling human mobility. Deportation appears to be one self-evidently legitimate solution to deal with unauthorized mobile persons but is in practice a highly complex process of statecraft. As a group of researchers from law, history, social anthropology, and geography, we are working towards an interdisciplinary research proposal for a project which aims at opening new perspectives on the reconstruction and analysis of deportation regimes in their cross-border entanglements. We are looking for a candidate who has expertise in this given topic and is interested in contributing to the development of the proposal in close collaboration with the group of applicants.

Tasks and responsibilities:
- Taking a substantial role in the elaboration of a major research proposal in close cooperation with the group of applicants
- Contributing to the organization of an international workshop
- Contributing to a peer-reviewed publication

Requirements:
- A completed PhD in social science, the humanities (e.g. geography, social anthropology, global studies, history, migration/urban/cultural studies, sociology), or law
- Proven expertise in the research area of migration, migration control, and/or deportation
- Evidence of publication capacity and of capacity to elaborate a clear research and publication plan
- Experience in diverse qualitative research methodologies
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary work. Experience in interdisciplinary research is an asset
- Excellent language skills in English. Skills in German, French, and other languages are an im-portant asset
- Strong writing skills
- Team spirit

Appointment and employment conditions:
- 80% - 100% appointment for 12 months
- In case of successful submission of the project, the applicant would have the possibility of a 4 years post-doc appointment
- A gross salary according to salary regulations of the Canton Bern
- Starting date: February 1st 2020 or upon agreement
