This conference seeks to bring together scholars from around the world to explore a number of themes that relate to the historical development of the international Red Cross Movement. With its origins in the mid-19th century, this global humanitarian organisation includes the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC); the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); as well as the 189 (at last count) national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The conference acknowledges the growing number of historians working in the rapidly expanding area of the history of the international Red Cross Movement.

Keynote Speakers (confirmed):
Professor Davide Rodogno, Professor of international History, The Graduate Institute, Geneva

Topics include: relations between the different national Red Cross societies across time & place; historicizing the internationalism & humanitarianism of the Red Cross Movement; challenges to the structure & ideals of the Red Cross Movement; examination of relationships between the IFRC, the ICRC and national societies; contested themes of conflict & neutrality; gender & race; war & the militarization of charity; and histories of specific national societies.
