The chair of Non-European History, Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg (Germany) invites applications for the following position:

1 PhD scholarship in history of the Chinese Diaspora in mainland Southeast Asia

The PhD position will be filled for a project period of three years. The German Ministry of Education and Research will provide (TVL-13, 50%) the scholarship, covering living as well as travelling expenses.

The successful candidate will pursue research in the collaborative interdisciplinary research project "Grounding Area Studies in Social Practice: Southeast Asian Studies in Freiburg", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as well as the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). The disciplines involved include Political Science, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Economics and Asian History. Participating scholars conceptualize Area Studies as relational and pursue transculturally-oriented research beyond Orientalism and Occidentalism. Subproject:
Chinese Diaspora Networks and democratization and decentralization in mainland Southeast Asia in the 20th century.

The goal of this subproject is the investigation of the impact of overseas ethnic Chinese in mainland Southeast Asia on developments in their homeland and vice versa, which includes analyses of specific Southeast Asian phenomena and a variety of transnational and global aspects as well.

All subprojects will be pursued in close cooperation with the other subprojects and involve extensive archival research, regular attendance in workshops and field research trips to Southeast Asia.

Requirements:
- a strong academic record in Modern History, Sinology or neighboring disciplines
- a completed master degree
- excellent language skills in English, good knowledge of Chinese and/or another mainland Southeast Asian language
- ability and willingness to work in an international research team and contribute to the common goals of the project
- working place will be the chair of Non-European History (Lehrstuhl für Außereuropäische Geschichte) at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg
