This workshop conference focuses on the process of transformation world societies have been experiencing since the middle of the 20th century, and which can be summarized generally under the term "globalization". There exists a broad and ongoing discussion on the subject, both in the scholarly literature and the popular press. But several aspects of globalization have yet to attract the attention they deserve. For example, globalization has mainly been discussed from the perspective of OECD countries, wherein the focus has been rather narrowly economic and political. Moreover, issues of continuities and ruptures in relation to earlier developmental periods in the history of world systems are seldom addressed in a serious manner by current analysts of the globalization process.

The conference will contribute to the closing of these research gaps. It will build on the pre-existing strengths in world systems studies at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Hannover, while also establishing an international and interdisciplinary context for the discussion of these important topics. The discussion will focus on regional, local, national and international entanglements instead of concentrating on one region only.

Conference language is English.
